parameters of support elements, as well
as their compatibility with geology of the
mine, is required.
Empirical methods, that allow
prediction of the stability of the roadway
with a reasonable degree of certainty
will, however, be of little use when
trying to define the strategies for
reducing deformations. For this, the
specific physical parameters of the rock,
rock mass structure, rock pressure and
the active work of support elements
need to be taken into account. Numerical
models allow visualisation of the
expected deformation and the resistance
of the support system to this process. Of
course, the accuracy of specific support
performance is improved if the specific
material parameters of the support
system elements available at the mine
location are taken into account in the
analysis.
Any implementation in the mine
should be carefully recorded and
measured according to a monitoring
programme agreed at the start. This
stage provides the first step in the
feedback cycle for developing the most
appropriate set of support solutions for
any particular mine and its specific
geological and geotechnical setting. The
second step is to ensure design
compatibility through the analysis of
in situ
information and use this to further
calibrate the developed parameters.
The commitment of the mine
personnel is vital to the success of this
process. Willingness to change every day
practices and implement the systematic
monitoring activities is the key for
success. Also important is the
professional support of a consultant with
previous and adequate experience of
such an approach. Cooperation between
the two will result in the integration of
all the necessary
