Mears Group is the leading provider of
horizontal directional drilling (HDD) services
with a focus on value-added projects –
design/build and engineering, procurement
and construction (EPC) – where HDD is a critical factor.
Serving the oil and gas, electrical and water/
wastewater industries, its mission is to be the industries’
first choice as a partner; problem solver, collaborative and
has the technical ability and resources to produce safe,
high quality work. Mears HDD operates over 25 rigs with
capacities of up to 1.3 million lb of pullback.
Mears Group, along with a large specialised project
team, finalised a challenging gas transmission installation
for a major gas company. The installation required Mears to
perform a horizontal directional drill (HDD) shore approach
at a length of 5346 ft. The installation of the 26 in. gas
transmission line required connection into a dual 18 in. hot
tap (tying into a pressurised system).
This long drill’s entry point was onshore near a
neighborhood beach and exiting offshore in water depth
of approximately 25 ft. Mears’ Prime 1.1 million lb rig was
setup at the onshore entry location. The pilot hole was
drilled inside of a pre-driven 48 in. casing with a 14 in.
centralised casing.
