sand, 40% water and 50% oil in the pipeline, then
the instrument can create a visual image of all four
components.
Ultimately, the Flowrox Deposition Watch can show
operators deposition thickness, deposition profile,
growth rates over time, composition and free flow
volume – all of which allow engineers to understand
the areas where pipes are prone to damaging deposits.
ECT is an imaging technique that can be used for
the determination of the permittivity distribution of
dielectric medium within a region of interest.
The Flowrox Deposition Watch is a predictive device,
as opposed to reactive solutions offered by competitors,
allowing its operators to address deposition issues well
before critical levels that cause downtime or costly
damage are reached.
The deposition of paraffin wax and asphaltenes is
a common reason for a major decrease in production
and revenue in oil wells as it affects valves, pumps and
pipelines, along with other pipeline components critical
to the fluid control process.
The Flowrox Deposition Watch was developed
specifically for use in the oil and gas industry;
allowing customers to generate real-time images of
any depositions affecting a piping system – without
ever having to open up the pipeline and slow down
production.
This new technology has little competition. For
instance, ultrasonic devices can monitor deposits but
after a few millimetres of deposit exists, this type of
instrumentation loses its ability to continue provide
information on how deposits continue to form and
their thickness. Flowrox Deposition Watch will allow
the industry to make better decisions regarding when to
add chemicals and the frequency of addition of these
expensive chemicals for treatment of depositions.
The cost of an unplanned shutdown due to deposits
can have a catastrophic effect on operation, and thus
engineers and operators tend to overfeed chemicals to
cleanse depositions or schedule more physical cleaning of
the pipeline than necessary.
Summary
New technologies are born every day. In robust economic
periods, many operators cannot justify slowing production
or processing to trial new technologies. Most innovation
and process optimisation occurs when oil producers face
lean economic periods. These new technologies can help
to assist pipeline operators and oil producers to reduce
cost and maximise profits.
