The system has been provided with
numerous safety systems, such as
safety panels and interlocks to prevent
the system from surge loads and to
ensure a safe and trouble-free
operation.
FLSmidth used several engineering
tools in order to design a reliable,
cost-effective system within the
shortest delivery period. Besides using
finite element methods (FEM) to
simulate the conveyor belt’s
behaviour, especially at curved
sections of the conveyor route, discrete
element method (DEM) simulation
was used for the design of all material
transfer points in order to smoothen
the material flow, resulting in the
lowest possible level of both dust
emissions and wear of the chute liners.
The selected drive concept of the
pipe conveyor includes variable
frequency drives, which contribute to
a very low level of conveyor belt
tension by adjusting start-up
sequences of the four electrical motors
d of
pipe conveyor and another one at the
tail end) with a total installed power of
4000 kW.
Project execution
The entire project was executed locally
by the FLSmidth team in Chennai,
India, supported by FLSmidth’s global
network of minerals processing,
material handling and supply chain
management specialists.
During the execution period,
FLSmidth adopted several approaches,
not only in design but also in
construction, fabrication and
installation of the conveyor belt. One
such approach included pulling the
belt and installing the entire length in
one step by pre-splicing the entire
conveyor belt length, saving more than
three months on the schedule
compared to conventional belt splicing
methods.
Although the erection and
commissioning works were subject to
several challenges, such as casting
foundations in seawater-logged areas,
hamlets and
protecting existing vegetation, the
client’s expectations were met and even
exceeded.
Summary
By opting to use the FLSmidth KOCH
pipe conveyor, NTECL gained optimal
power consumption per tonne of coal
conveyed, upheld land requirements
and created a dust- and spillage-free
conveying environment. This system
contributes significantly to the
customer’s savings on both investment
and operational cost by considerably
reducing mooring times leading to a
faster turnaround of high-capacity bulk
vessels.
The NTECL pipe conveyor project is
an example of FLSmidth’s ability in
both innovative engineering and
excellent operational performance. This
innovative approach has created a
global benchmark in safe and
environmentally friendly material
handling systems.
