The site was the oil industry equivalent of the Mary
Celeste, the infamous ghost ship of the 19
th
century.
There was grass growing between the concrete slabs, the
loading rack canopy had seen better days and the offices
looked as if the staff had gone out for a very long lunch.
Two containerised foam proportioning units, utilising
Hawkes Fire’s water motor driven foam proportioners
together with foam tank and valves, were provided to
supply finished foam to both the loading racks and the
tanks via Angus full surface top pourers for floating roof
tanks and Angus MkV pourers for the fixed roof tanks.
The site is now fully operational complete with a
state of the art fire suppression system and is a vital
supply link for northern fuel retailers.
Case study 2
Hawkes Fire celebrate 40 years in business this year so it
is gratifying that the company have secured yet another
fuel distribution project in the Teesside heartland. This
site is supplied by a railhead so it has the additional need
for protection to the trackside offloading. This is
protected by selfinducing oscillating foam monitors
complete with dedicated self bunded foam concentrate
tanks.
However, the site required completely new water
supplies based on the need to protect the railhead,
vapour recovery, storage tanks and bunds to the foam
design standard EN 13565-2.
Utilising a 608 m
3
water tank that was erected on the
site in 2 days, Hawkes Fire were able to incorporate the
single diesel 4000 gal./min NFPA 20 fire pump and
additional water powered foam proportioning units into
two separate but linked steel containers as shown in
Figure 4.
