Project scheduling
A significant role of the MAC is to deliver turnkey projects
through integrated services including multi-disciplinary
engineering, procurement, installation, commissioning and
start-up, maintenance engineering and global service. All of
which have a significant impact on project scheduling. Add to
this the challenges of difficult and time-consuming customs
controls and inland freight management in various countries
around the world and the task becomes clear.
Cost-risk-schedule
Overcoming these challenges requires an execution
methodology that is based on modern project management
techniques supported by experienced and qualified professional
competent resources and proven systems and tools.
The focus of the approach is ensuring that the project
scope is well defined at the outset, that the work is planned
in advance of execution activities, that responsibilities are
identified and agreed upon between all participants and that
detailed project-specific plans covering all aspects of the work
are established, implemented and followed.
Lifecycle service and support
Once a pipeline is installed and commissioned, it must be
supported by a well-established, long-term service support
infrastructure in the region, together with the ability to apply
expertise remotely.
ABB ensures that all operational
assets are fully aligned to its
lifecycle programme to safeguard all
technologies from obsolescence. An
example is the upgrade of the initial
SCP gas pipeline, being delivered in
conjunction with the SCPx project.
Providing long-term healthcare
for the pipeline projects often means
setting up a local office to assist with
these activities. The office needs to be
equipped with enhanced engineering
and staging facilities together with
significant system test equipment.
A healthcare contract involves the
active management of the systems
and ensures maximum lifecycle
benefit to the operator. It includes full
technical support to keep the systems
operational and working at optimum
levels; engineering cover on each of
the major assets – offshore platforms,
onshore terminals, oil and gas export
pipelines; design and implementation
of system modifications; plus the
supply and management of spare parts.
A dedicated and locally based
contract manager should be employed
to provide a good understanding of
customer needs, regular reporting
on system status and be driven by
continuous improvement.
A healthcare technical lead
engineer should provide maintenance
and enhancement of the system,
modifications and upgrades, and
consistent standards across assets.
For the Caspian project, ABB’s
office in Baku, Azerbaijan hosts
a development and test system.
The healthcare contract includes
maintenance of this system as well as
training of key operational staff.
