S
eismic land and sea exploration applications are adopting
lithium-ion battery (Li-ion) technology because of its high
energy density, longer runtime, faster recharge time, smaller
size, and lower weight. Using Li-ion for wireless and wired acquisition
systems offers many advantages over older rechargeable technologies
like sealed lead acid (SLA) batteries or nickel-based chemistries.
This article will provide a comparison of Li-ion to lead acid batteries
and nickel-based chemistries, and highlights the many benefits and
considerations when using Li-ion battery technology to power devices
that are designed to operate in extreme temperature, rugged and
submersible environments.
