n 25 September, 1999, NASA declared that the
Mars Climate Orbiter mission was a failure.
After a 286 day build up, the Orbiter was lost
and NASA had learned a US$125 million lesson
about communication. How did this happen? A simple
communication error. One software system was producing
thruster-firing calculations in a US Customary Unit, and the
software that was receiving those calculations expected them
to be in metric units.
