hina begins 2015withmajormilestones
achieved in thepreceding years tomake the
widely-used termof emerging economy an
inaccuratedescriptionof its regional and
global status.Corrected in termsofpurchasingpower
parity,China’sGDP surpassed thatof theUS as the
world’s largest economy inOctober 2014, according
to the IMF, although theAmerican economy is still
larger in absolutedollar terms. The countryovertook
itsAmerican rival in termsof energy consumption
in 2010,with its totalprimary energy consumption
of 2339.6million toewhen thatof theUSwas
2284.9million toe. It has since retained its status as
theworld’s largest energy consumer– as reflected
in its 2013 totalprimary energy consumptionof
2852.4million toe equal to 22.4%of the global
consumption against theUS’s 2265.8million toe equal
to 17.8%of such consumption. The twomilestones
should not be a surprise, as they have been the
